This project is an exploration of thresholds. What interested us as a group was public interaction with the installation. We discussed a variety of options for how to achieve this. What became apparent was that we didn’t want to give people a choice about the interaction, we wanted to create a subliminal interaction by interrupting the public’s daily routine.
We used lengths of stainless steel to place on the riser of the staircase. As it isn’t as reflective as mirrors, the effect was a blurred reflected image. The result changes throughout the day and is particularly successful when people use the steps – both for the user and for the observer.
